Hi,

I am searching for a while, how I can change the format of “Freshness time with different languages”.

With English (by default), we can change the format, by adding the code, like…,

“1 month, 3 days” ago to “1 month ago”.

With a plugin called “bbpress toolkit”, it has an option to do it. It said “only English”.

I am not sure how this freshness time format will change when we use different languages but I guess there must be the way to solve it.

With my project and customers voices, we or they wish to display like…,

“1 month 3 days ago” to “1 months ago” or “33 days ago”, it means that “to display a shorten freshness time” will be much easier to read and show how old the post is with other languages too.

At this moment, I am using bbpress toolbox and the great function “manual and auto closing topics”. It can set “auto closing days and display as “this post will be closed xx days from latest post.”.

If there are any ideas or thought about this freshness time format “change process with other languages”, please let me know.

Hi,

This is a big problem in both WordPress and bbPress, and right now, there is no good solution. The way it is setup, works for most languages, and I have not seen anyone proposing some way to change it so it makes sense for japanese and other langauges where this poses a big issue.

The only way I see is to write replacement functions, and make changes to templates to use replacement function instead of the default one. This new function can format things differently, in accordance to the specific language.

Thank you so much for your reply. I did not know that this is a quite big problem of WP and bbpress.

Since I do not have any ideas or ability to write a function for this, I need to drop this one.

I would not say much about it, but it looks odd to us (within Japanese language) and need count days. Well many users do not mind how old topics or posts in these days.

Anyway, if you find or any ideas to push this case up, please let me know!

Surely, this option within your plugin, bbpress toolbox, will be great!!

This can’t be solved through plugin only, bbPress templates need to be updated or overriden, and that can be done through active theme, so it is not simple or straitforward solution. Can you give me examples of how the strings look now and how would you prefer to have them to fit the japanase language more (in english if possible, so I understand the difference)?

Right now, in Japanese, it shows as “1 week, 5 days ago”. It does make a sense but we do not say the days like this.

We usually say “12 days ago” or “About 2 weeks ago”. Calculating and showing “About” is difficult as I can imagine, so it should be simple like “days ago”.

What I wish to display is ” 12 days ago”. I saw your article on this site which guides to change the display the date to freshness time.

I have done this, and also if this above is possible, I would like to show like “2019 Dec 5th 17:58 (12 days ago)” in Japanese.

This will definitely require new function. And, you are right, saying ’12 days’ or ‘2 weeks’ is more natural than saying ‘1 week, 5 days’, at least in my native language (Serbian), so all these freshness functions are made with English in mind and just left as is for all other languages.

I will add the options for this into my GD Quantum Theme Pro for bbPress (full templates replacement) in next 2.1 version soon. It already has option to switch between freshness and actual date, and I will include some extra tweaks to the calculation too. Adding this to Default bbPress templates would require templates overrides in theme to use different functions, and right now there is no way to do that via plugin.

With our consideration, we cannot change the theme right now, therefore, we need to hold or drop this case. I guess bbpress developers would not touch this case, since they are using it with English.

So! Is this theme replacing “only” bbpress and also work with buddypress?

If that is so, we will deeply reconsider to purchase it!

I have still not done this. GD Quantum Theme is very stable right now, so I was not adding updates recently. But, I plan minor update for tomorrow, and I will try to include this too. If not tomorrow, I will have another update next week.

I have done some extra investigating, and this is not going into the theme. Next major GD bbPress Toolbox Pro 5.9 (scheduled for next week) will include tweak for this. There is a centralized function in bbPress that can be filtered to change the way freshness is displayed.
